1992年始習箏,師承焦金海教授。1993入讀香港演藝學院中樂系二年制文憑課程,主修古箏,副修中國敲擊,師從蔡雅絲及閻學敏老師。繼而於1995年入讀該院學位課程,主修古箏及敲擊樂,並於1998年夏獲香港演藝學院頒發音樂學士銜。
畢業後繼續留校進修一年制專業文憑課程,分別跟隨許凌子老師及閻學敏老師主修古箏及副修中國敲擊。邱氏更於2005年修畢香港浸會大學音樂教育碩士學位。
邱氏在學期間亦曾多次到內地進修,先後隨古箏名家曹正教授,邱大成教授,饒寧新教授及周延甲教授進修箏藝。1999年春獲頒發成龍獎學金及香港上海匯豐銀行之內地交流獎學金,前往北京隨古箏名家周望進修古箏技巧。同年接受香港電台第四台音樂吸引力的邀請,於節目中彈奏樂曲及接受訪問。
邱氏亦醉心於表演藝術的研究,她曾多次隨校到日本、英國等地演出。曾任香港青年中樂團古箏首席,現為香港中樂團及澳門中樂團特約樂師、香港科技大學、香港中文大學、香港理工大學、音樂事務處、工聯會及多間中小學古箏導師。先後隨香港青年中樂團及澳門中樂團到星馬及葡萄牙等地演出。
從92年至今邱氏不斷參加各大小型音樂會。1998年分別於香港大會堂及演藝學院公開演出了兩場個人獨奏音樂會,名為弦索古今韻及邱丹青學士學位(古箏及敲擊)畢業音樂會。1999年夏於香港演藝學院舉辦其專業文憑畢業音樂會。2002年邱氏參與香港管弦樂團與林子祥合作之港樂-林子祥演唱會。2003年邱氏再次接受香港電台第四台室樂雅聚的邀請,於節目中暢談教學心得及彈奏樂曲。2004年邱氏得到星輝製作公司邀請參與電影「功夫」之後期製作為該片作古箏配樂。2006年為香港旅遊協會宣傳短片作古箏配樂。2007年參與中港台合作劇集《射鵰英雄傳》的後期製作為該片作古箏配樂。2008年為東亞運動會主題曲配樂。
2000年邱氏更上一層樓,開辦箏之音樂學院兼任院長至今。更組成丹青箏樂團,直此非牟利音樂組織以提高香港人對中國傳統音樂的認識及興趣。自2000年至今,丹青箏樂團曾多次為社區及慈善機構作義務演出。每年箏之音樂學院均會贊助丹青箏樂團於不同的文娛中心及大會堂獻藝。一方面可以增進團員及學生的演奏經驗,另方面可起到推廣古箏藝術的功效。
Chiu began learning zheng in 1992 under Professor Jiao Jin-hai. In 1993, she studied a Diploma course at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) with major in zheng under Choi Ngai-si and minor in Chinese percussion under Yim Hok-man. After Chiu had graduated from the Diploma course in 1995, she enrolled on a Degree course in the same year in the HKAPA and was awarded a Bachelor degree in music in 1998. Chiu had subsequently taken a Professional Diploma in HKAPA in zheng and Chinese percussion under Xu Ling-zi and Yim Hok-man, respectively. Chiu undertook her post-graduate studies in the Hong Kong Baptist University and was conferred a Master’s degree in music education in 2005.
Chiu had won scholarships for zheng studies during her undergraduate times, and as a zheng enthusiast, she also pursued zheng music in China under many zheng virtuosi including Cao Zheng, Rao Ning-xin, Qiu Da-cheng, Zhou Yau-jai and Zhao Wen.
Over the years, Chiu had performed in many local and overseas concerts, and had given two zheng solos. Chiu participated in the “Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra – George Lam Concert Live 2002”. She was invited by the RTHK to appear on the Radio 4 Programme “Music of Friends” to talk freely on what she has learned from teaching zheng and to play some zheng song pieces. Furthermore, Chiu had been invited to play background zheng music for many art productions including: the film “Kung Fu Hustle” in 2004 produced by the “Star Film Group”, the 2006 promotional film of the HK Tourist Association, China-HK-Taiwan TV series “Eagle-shooting Heroes”, and last but not least, the theme of the 2008 East Asia Olympic Games.
Chiu is dedicated to the teaching of zheng. She opened the Music Academy of Zheng (MAZ) in 2000 and founded the Tan Ching Zheng Ensemble; the latter is a non-profit making group, with a view to promoting and heightening zheng and Chinese music.
Chiu is currently a free-lance musician of the HK Chinese Orchestra and the Macau Chinese Orchestra, a Zheng instructor of the HK University of Science and Technology, the Chinese University of HK, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions, and various primary and secondary schools.
